Government PDF

This is a one semester in-depth study of the founding documents to give students a deep and    accurate understanding of the principles that framed our Republic.  Classical learning techniques are emphasized.  The student will gain research and study skills that build academic skill and  character.  The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were written to be understood by the common citizen, reading and thoroughly understanding these documents are the goal of this course. This course teaches a Biblical view of law and government, the Founding Fathers - their beliefs and worldview, the Declaration of Independence, and a detailed study of the entire Constitution with review, discussion, and tests.

Economics PDF

This course challenges students to think seriously about the key elements of basic economics. The core textbook, Common Sense Economics, is an easy to understand book that explains   economic principles using everyday language and easy to understand illustrations and examples. Course includes an excellent introduction to economics and public policy, exploring the proper role of government in a free society.  John Stossel’s DVDs are full of real-world examples that  offer practical insights on how to identify and understand key economic principles that shape our lives, decisions, interactions, and governmental policies. These videos will enable the student to see just what the given principle looks like in the world around them. Another video used in this course, “The ultimate Resource”, will look at the “before and after” lives of individuals and      families, whose lives are changing in spectacular ways as a result of free market incentives. Micro and Macro economic principles will be covered in this course.

English (Literary Analysis) PDF

This course will teach the student how to read, infer, analyze, and write about literature. Additionally, it will teach the student to recognize an author’s worldview and exercise discernment when reading. The student will review basic paragraph and essay formats as they write about literature. Course topics include         analytical techniques; reading with understanding by analyzing the plot, examining the types of conflict and analyzing themes – finding truth through the power of the story. Literary devices, or tools of the writer, will be taught as well. Poetry by Chaucer, Watts, and Newton will be analyzed, memorized, and recited.  The Bible will be used to teach forms of imager; similes, personification, metaphors, and symbolism. We will cover four English writers; Shakespeare, Dickens, Stevenson, and Orwell. The student will study one to three pieces of literature from each author. Shakespeare will be read out loud in class, as it is meant to be. Some pieces will be analyzed by watching a well produced video in place of reading the book. This by no means minimizes the Importance of reading great literature, but allows the student to analyze all the elements of fiction as he watches a video. This will also teach the student to view a movie with a critical eye rather than just “consuming” it without reasoning. Books to be studied: Comedy of Errors and The Merchant of Venice  by William Shakespeare; A Christmas Carol, Nicholas Nickleby, and Great Expectations by Charles Dickens; The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson; Animal Farm by George Orwell.

Curriculum

Comedy of Errors by Shakespeare

The Merchant of Venice by Shakespeare

Tales from Shakespeare by Charles and Mary Lamb

A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson

Animal Farm by George Orwell
